Silvia Ortiz
B.Sc. M.Sc. Ph.D
Staff Stratigrapher – Micropalaeontologist

Silvia joined PetroStrat in September 2013 and prior to that had 12 years’ experience in university research. She completed a Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Zaragoza, Spain, in 2006. The focus of her Ph.D. was the taxonomy and palaeoecology of Palaeogene benthonic foraminifera, palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and application in chronostratigraphy. Silvia also has experience of a two-year postdoctoral research position at University College London (UCL). Prior to joining PetroStrat, she was a researcher at the Stratigraphy and Palaeontology Department of the University of the Basque Country, Spain. She was particularly interested in the analysis of critical events along Earth’s history such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) and the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The material she studied was mostly from Iberian outcrops and Atlantic ODP sites and this research has been published. Silvia has now gained biostratigraphic experience in the Cenozoic and Cretaceous of the North Sea, Cretaceous of East Africa (Indian Ocean) and the Cretaceous and Jurassic of the Porcupine Basin (Atlantic Ireland), including wellsite assignments in Denmark.

Francisca Rosa
B.Sc. Ph.D.
Stratigrapher – Micropalaeontologist

Francisca joined PetroStrat in February 2014, after completing PhD research at the University of Algarve (Portugal). Her Ph.D. study was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and focussed on Late Pleistocene marine sequences from the Gulf of Cadiz Margin (SW Iberia), namely its sedimentary and micropalaeontological (benthonic foraminifera) record, and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. A part of this work had already been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Previously, after attaining her degree in Applied and Environmental Geology from the University of Lisbon, she worked on marine sequences from the NW Iberian Margin for a European funded project. Since joining PetroStrat, she has been focussing on the North Sea Tertiary, Cretaceous and Late Jurassic biostratigraphy and palaeoenvironments of the Norwegian, Danish and UK sectors. She has also worked on the Plio-Quaternary micropalaeontology of Trinidad, on Tertiary sequences of the Gulf of Mexico, Colombia and South China Sea (Vietnam), and on the Palaeogene-Cretaceous of East Africa (Tanzania).

Staff Stratigrapher – Micropalaeontologist

Charlotte re-joined PetroStrat in October 2013 after completing the M.Sc. Micropalaeontology course at the University of Birmingham in September. For her main M.Sc. project she focussed on West African Late Cretaceous foraminifera and found that morphogroup analysis of benthonic foraminifera was successful in revealing local sea level trends. Since joining PetroStrat, Charlotte has been working on the micropalaeontology and biostratigraphy of Late Cretaceous and Tertiary sections from West Africa (Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Liberia, Nigeria and Mauritania) and the North Sea (Danish sector). In addition she has gained wellsite experience within West Africa and the North Sea.

His master’s thesis studied Miocene Planktonic Foraminifera from ODP Site 999, Western Caribbean Sea; broadly focussing on biostratigraphy and using depth-stratified planktonic groups to show restructuring of the thermocline related to closure of the Isthmus of Panama. Since joining PetroStrat, Andrew has continued to work on Neogene deep water material from the Colombian Basin and expanded his knowledge further into the Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad and Nigeria. He has also gained experience in Tertiary-Jurassic sections from the North Sea. Stratigrapher – Micropalaeontologist

Sam joined PetroStrat in January 2016, having completed a M.Sc. in Applied and Petroleum Micropalaeontology (with distinction) at the University of Birmingham. His M.Sc. research studied Cenozoic foraminifera from two recent BP Clair field appraisal wells in the West Shetland Basin; focussing on the biostratigraphy over the Mid-Miocene Unconformity. Previously, his M.Sci. research at the University of Southampton studied palynological variations across the PETM in a core from the Spitsbergen Central Basin. Sam has experience mud logging on onshore rigs in West Texas and New Mexico, working on both conventional and unconventional prospects in the Permian Basin. Before joining PetroStrat, Sam completed a 4-week appraisal of the BP Collection at the Natural History Museum, assessing the suitability of micropalaeontological material from the North Sea and the Celtic Basin for further study. Since joining PetroStrat, Sam has been working on the biostratigraphy of Neogene material from SE Asia and will be working in our Houston office as a Micropalaeontologist.
