Palynofacies for Reservoir Evaluation: Methodology and Applications for Unconventional Plays

Kerogen composition plays a key role in hydrocarbon generation and is therefore of great interest in subsurface analysis. The standard toolset for organic matter classification includes organic petrography, visual kerogen analysis and organic geochemistry. Palynofacies, however, while still underutilized in the hydrocarbon industry, also yields a great potential. Examples will be given to show the versatility of this method and its benefits to unconventional reservoir characterization. Petrostrat Inc. is the only American company providing this service to the industry.

Katrin completed a M.Sc. in Geology and a Ph.D. in Geology and Paleontology at Darmstadt University of Technology (Germany). She joined Shell International Exploration and Production in Rijswijk, The Netherlands in 2007 where she worked as biostratigrapher for 5 years. Afterwards she joined Shell Oil in Houston/Texas. Here, she became Shell biostratigraphic focal point for unconventional plays, developing workflows utilizing Palynofacies and Palynology for reservoir characterization and conducting regional studies used for acreage acquisition. Katrin works for Petrostrat since 2018 and helps promoting palynology in the US as business development advisor.
